Concrete driveways in the Ranchettes

Long driveways, shop pads and county road approaches for rural-residential lots outside Cheyenne.

The Ranchettes is a census-designated place in Laramie County next to Cheyenne, covering about 49 square miles with 6,199 residents in 2020. The census counted most of them, about 82 percent, as living in rural areas. We connect Ranchettes homeowners with independent concrete contractors for driveways, shop and RV pads, approaches and patios.

Bigger lots, longer driveways

On acreage lots, a driveway can run a long way from the road to the house and shop. Many owners pour concrete near the house and garage, where vehicles park and turn, and keep gravel farther out. A concrete apron in front of a shop or a pad for an RV or trailer is a common project. Heavier vehicles call for a thicker slab and good base under it.

County road access

Because the Ranchettes is unincorporated, a new or modified driveway onto a county road goes through Laramie County Public Works. Its access permit form requires a culvert when the approach would block the ditch enough that a two-year storm would overtop it, specifies corrugated metal pipe with flared ends sized by Public Works, and doesn't allow concrete or stone headwalls. Two inspections are included, one for location and size and one at completion. Public Works is at 307-633-4302.

Wind and open ground

Open prairie lots get the full force of Cheyenne-area wind, which matters on pour day and for where drifting snow piles up. Ask the contractor how they protect fresh concrete from fast drying, and think about where plows and blowers will push snow before setting the driveway layout.
